Anne Arundel County

The criminal defense lawyers at the Herbst Firm have extensive experience representing clients from all areas of Anne Arundel County.  Our experience in the county extends beyond the courthouses, as the criminal defense team is led by a longtime Anne Arundel County resident who understands the unique way the judicial system works in the county.  Anne Arundel is similar in size to Baltimore, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties, and like these jurisdictions has a large county police department that makes the majority of arrests.  The county police department is divided into four districts plus the headquarters, which is located in Millersville.  Northern District is based out of Brooklyn Park, Southern District is in Edgewater, Eastern District is located in Pasadena and Western District is in Odenton.  The only other local police department in the county is the Annapolis Police, but state agencies such as the Maryland Natural Resources Police, State Police and Transit Police have a large presence in the county.  The Attorney General’s Office often uses the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court to prosecute cases involving gang conspiracies and misconduct in office despite the fact that their office is located in Baltimore City.

North County is more densely populated than areas down south, and therefore has a higher crime rate and more yearly arrests.  The proximity of areas such as Glen Burnie, Linthicum and Pasadena to Baltimore City also results in more property crime cases as well as incidents involving firearms.  Further south there pockets of areas where crime is more prevalent, but overall the Edgewater district is definitely not as busy as Brooklyn Park.  In 2023 there were over 1,100 aggravated assaults and close to 5,000 thefts countywide.  Close to 300 individuals were charged with gun offenses and almost 2,000 cars were stolen.  Data for lesser offenses such as second degree assault, DUI and domestic crimes such as protective order violations are not readily accessible, but these are generally the most common crimes in all areas of Maryland.  Defendants charged with these offenses are often not arrested and booked, and therefore the data is harder to track.  Either way almost all criminal cases begin in either the Annapolis or Glen Burnie District Court locations.  Felony trial and jury trial prayers are held at the Circuit Court in downtown Annapolis, which has its own unique set of rules and procedures.

"I am writing this letter to thank you for doing such a great job in my case. If it were not for what you did I would still be in jail right now. My family and I are very grateful I have a second chance at life now, and if it wouldn't be like this if you were not so good at what you do. Thank you again Benjamin!" T.S.

"Thank you for all the time and effort that you put into defending my case. You were willing to fight for me when nobody else would believe my story, and you did not back down from the prosecutor. Another lawyer would have urged me to plead guilty, but you were willing to fight for me, and in the end justice was served. I appreciate everything you did and wish you all the best." Fred D.
